BJMC

Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication

Course Affiliation

BJMC Programme is an undergraduate course under Sambalpur University , Odisha, of three years duration- First Year- 7 papers, Second Year- 7 papers and Third Year- 7 papers. The academic session shall ordinarily begin in July and end in March. All annual examinations shall ordinarily to be held during March/April.

Course Objective

  • The mission of the RIMS is to provide academic environment conclusive for quality education.
  • The objective is to impart quality education to produce competent professionals to cater the needs of industry and society and interact with industry academia for better exposure.
  • The course content helps students to look within the context and understand the basics of print media, TV, radio, event management, public relations and new media. The modules have been crafted as per the standards from fundamental to highly advanced level of learning.
  • Provides a perfect blend of theoretical and practical components. It intends to give a real picture of working of media in the civil society.
  • Creates a need to follow the core principles of ethical journalism, the laws related to journalism and social framework that encourages the student to respect and follow the established values of the craft.
  • To enable students to explore all the nuances of different types of mass communication and how news is gathered, transmitted, and then disseminated to the masses.
  • To prepare the students to understand the basic principles of communication and its responsibilities towards the society, mass media and its convergence, responsive journalistic etiquettes, learning public relation skills, advertising grammar, maintaining ethical standards and tapping the new media for a digital growth.
  • To inculcate ethical values in student.

Course Pedagogy

  • The pedagogy at RIMS for BJMC Course follows an all-encompassing theoretical and hands-on approach in communication and media. The program goes beyond the conventional degree programs through its approach of combining creative methodologies and tools, to deliver effective and useful communication strategies.
  • To enhance the knowledge in upcoming concept and speaking skill in-house seminars are being conducted in the department. Each student is under the guidance of an anchor faculty, who gives their best input to the student to prepare a seminar report as well as to present their concept.
  • The classroom environment is highly interactive and a variety of teaching-learning methods are followed-interactive lectures, personality development programme, media experts as guest faculty, self-driven practical projects, role plays, presentation, group tasks, various software proficiency, workshops, conference, media projects for better exposure.
  • During the discussion in class, it is expected that students will participate and make a significant contribution. The faculty monitors the students & contributions to the discussion and ensures equitable distribution of opportunity for all students to participate over the duration of the course.
  • Apart from that, students also undergo one month internship in media house as part of the curriculum for exposure to the latest global trends in media and corporate communication.
  • We mix different type of technology for various lectures throughout the session and the students participate and contribute during the lectures

Admission Policy

Eligibility: The eligibility for admission to BJMC Programme of the University shall be same as the one decided by Sambalpur University        [ applicant should have passed the +2 Arts, Science or Commerce Examination of Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha or any examination of Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha or any
other Board recognized by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto with minimum 40% marks.]

Entrance Examination: Applicants aspiring for admission into BJMC Course must qualify in RIMSET entrance examination conducted by RIMS.

Selection Process: Group Discussion & Personal Interview.

Course Assessment

RIMS follow the academic regulations of its affiliating University. As per the course curriculum, each theory paper carries 100 marks out of which University conducts annual examination of 80 marks and the institute conducts internal examination of 20 marks.
